Inspiring Movies About Travel (part 2)

Do you love daydreaming and fantasizing amazing trips around the world? Then this list of movies is just the right thing for you. All of them will inspire you and make you want to search for plane tickets immediately so that you can make your dream holiday become a reality.

Bucket List

Two seventy-year-old men, played by the amazing Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, meet in a hospital with the same diagnosis. Lung cancer. One comes from the working class, while the other is a millionaire. Despite their differences, a genuine friendship grows between them and the two gentlemen decide to make all their dreams come true before their inevitable ends. They’ll take you on a trip to France, the Great Wall of China, the Great Pyramid of Giza, Mount Everest, Taj Mahal or on a safari to Tanzania. Are all of these places on your ‘bucket list’ too?

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong

The movie doesn’t have an overly complicated plot. Josh is an American who lives in Hong Kong, who meets Ruby, a beautiful Asian American. The story is told through dialogues during a night-time walk across Hong Kong. This romantic story is not a traditional one but it’s all the more believable. If you’re not much into romance, the movie also offers a great view of Hong Kong.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

What happens when British retirees decide to travel to a hotel in India based solely on pictures they found on the internet? You guessed it, it certainly won’t be boring. As you’ve probably guessed, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel won’t resemble the online ads at all. Add culture shock and conservative views into the mix, and you’re in for a pretty entertaining movie. There’s also no shortage of love and comedy. If you’ve already visited India, you’ll probably enjoy the movie and relive some fond memories from your own trip. The movie also has a sequel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Mamma Mia

The deep blue sea and beautiful views, all accompanied by ABBA songs and a wonderful performance by Meryl Streep. Mamma Mia is a musical that will make you ‘hum’ all the familiar ABBA melodies and maybe even plan a holiday trip to Greece. The movie takes place on the island of Skopelos and sometimes also on Skiathos. Thanks to the movie, Skopelos has become a huge tourist attraction in 2008 with many people traveling to experience the beauty of the scenery from Mamma Mia. Whether you plan your holiday here or on some other Greek island, you can always look forward to sunny days, a blue sea, and good food.

The Way

Have you ever heard of Camino de Santiago? It’s a pilgrimage to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain. Thousands of people undertake this pilgrimage every year. The length depends entirely on where you start your journey. It can be 120 km or even  1000 km. Thomas Avery, played by Martin Sheen, travels to France to collect the ashes of his son who died during a storm in the Pyrenees while on the pilgrimage. Thomas decides to honor the memory of his son by finishing his pilgrimage, starting where he left off. The movie offers a journey of self-discovery.

Lost in Translation

Are you fascinated by the far east? Then you definitely need to watch Lost in Translation. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) comes to Tokyo to shoot a whiskey commercial. He meets Charlotte and together they try to solve the problems of their lives and relationships they’re no longer happy in. A story with a great script, coupled with images of Tokyo at night. What more could you ask for?

The Beach

We’ll stay in Asia for a little longer. Young Leonardo DiCaprio travels to Thailand, looking to enjoy a few wild adventures in Bangkok. He learns about a secret island with a beautiful beach that catches his interest. A couple from France persuades him to go with them and try to find this magical place. As the movie shows, not even a ‘paradise’ is always ideal. The movie takes place at the Ao Maya beach on the island of Koh Phi Phi.
